Stop Pets at Home Selling Unsuitable Hamster Cages

Stop Pets at Home Selling Unsuitable Hamster Cages
The Issue
I’ve seen too many hamsters kept in cages that are far too small because pet shops told owners they were ‘suitable.’ It breaks my heart knowing these animals are suffering in silence. Hamsters are active creatures that require ample space to burrow, run, and explore. When confined to tiny enclosures, they are unable to express their natural behaviours, leading to stress, boredom, and health problems.
The Blue Cross recommends a minimum hamster cage size of 100cm x 50cm floor space and a height of at least 50cm, with a minimum of 20cm of bedding for burrowing. Glass tanks or aquariums with mesh lids are preferred for their ability to hold deep bedding and prevent escapes. The cage should also be a single, continuous floor space, as opposed to multiple levels, and have a solid-surface exercise wheel that allows the hamster to run without curving its spine.
While Pets at Home plays a significant role in pet retail, it has a responsibility to ensure the products it sells promote good animal welfare. By selling cages that do not meet minimal welfare standards, they contribute to the misconception that such living conditions are acceptable for hamsters.
We urge Pets at Home to re-evaluate their product lines and replace inadequate cages with ones that meet or exceed the recommended dimensions. Educating pet owners with accurate information on proper hamster care is vital in preventing animal suffering and promoting more responsible pet ownership.
Please join me in calling on Pets at Home to commit to selling only suitable cages for hamsters and to provide better information and support for pet owners. Sign this petition to help ensure all hamsters in Cardiff, and across the UK, live healthier, happier lives.
