The Issue

As a passionate pet owner, I understand the profound joy and responsibility that comes with caring for our animal companions. My first pet came into my life from a family who could no longer provide the time and attention he needed. That experience opened my eyes to the challenges faced by many unwanted pets. It motivated me to adopt another animal from a rescue centre where scores of animals were longing for a loving home.

It is heart-wrenching to witness the overcrowding in animal rescues, a problem only exacerbated by poor practices in pet shops like Pets at Home. Pet stores are failing in several crucial areas—improper vetting of potential pet owners, misidentification of animals' sexes, and a glaring lack of adequate information about the responsibilities of pet ownership. These practices often result in animals being relinquished to shelters or rescues shortly after purchase when the realities of pet ownership become apparent to unprepared owners.

According to the RSPCA, an alarming number of animals end up in shelters each year, not because of a lack of homes but due to a lack of informed and responsible pet ownership. This issue could be mitigated if pet stores like Pets at Home adopted more responsible and comprehensive vetting procedures and committed to educating their customers about the true scope of animal care.

By signing this petition, you are pushing for fundamental changes in how Pets at Home conducts its business. We urge them to cease the sale of pets and focus on promoting responsible pet ownership by collaborating with rescue organizations to rehome animals in need. Together, we can reduce the number of animals that end up in shelters and ensure a better future for the pets that bring us such immeasurable joy.

Please sign this petition to call for Pets at Home to stop selling pets and take responsibility for helping reduce animal homelessness and suffering. Your signature can make a significant impact in creating a more responsible and compassionate pet ownership culture.
