Stop Petco from keeping their bettas in plastic cups

The Issue

Every time I walk into a Petco, my heart sinks when I see rows of bettas languishing in small, plastic cups. It’s cruel and unnecessary. No living being deserves to be confined in such a limited space without access to appropriate habitat and enrichment.

Bettas, or Siamese fighting fish, are fascinating creatures that naturally inhabit the shallow waters of Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, and other countries in Southeast Asia. These beautiful fish belong to the wild Betta splendens species, living in rice paddies, marshes, and slow-moving streams where they can swim freely amongst plants, explore hiding spots, and engage in natural behaviors. The tiny, plastic cups at Petco deny them these basic comforts, reducing their quality of life significantly.

The practice of keeping bettas in small, unsanitary enclosures seems to continue because it is more convenient and cheaper than providing adequately sized tanks with filtration systems. However, this cost-saving measure comes at a significant ethical cost. These cups limit their movement and often lead to increased stress, illness, and premature death.

Petco's reputation as a pet care company should align with its duty of ensuring humane treatment for all animals under its care. By adopting sustainable and ethical practices, they can set an industry standard that respects animal welfare. Providing larger tanks, proper filtration, and enrichment opportunities for bettas would improve the quality of life for these creatures and reflect well on their brand.

Addressing this issue is not unfeasible. Other retailers have successfully implemented better living conditions for bettas, proving that it is both possible and beneficial. Better standards of care not only improve the health and happiness of animals but can also educate the public about responsible pet ownership.

By signing this petition, we urge Petco to reconsider their practices and lead the way towards better treatment of bettas. Implementing humane conditions for these fish is in line with animal welfare principles and will likely enhance customer trust and satisfaction.

Please sign this petition to demand change now. Together, we can ensure that bettas receive the care they deserve and push toward a more humane future in pet retail.
