Petition to Protect the Right of Disabled Individuals to Marry Without Losing Social Security Disability Benefits

To: The United States Congress, The Social Security Administration

We, the undersigned, urge the federal government to amend Social Security rules that penalize disabled individuals for getting married by reducing or eliminating their SupplementalSocial Security Disability Income benefits.

Currently, disabled individuals who receive Social Security Disability benefits face financial hardship when they choose to marry, as their benefits may be reduced or entirely revoked. This “marriage penalty” unfairly discriminates against people with disabilities by forcing them to choose between financial stability and the right to marry.

Marriage is a fundamental human right, and no person should be forced to forgo love and companionship due to restrictive government policies. The current system perpetuates economic hardship for disabled individuals and contradicts the principles of equality and dignity.

We call upon Congress and the Social Security Administration to:

1. Eliminate the marriage penalty for disabled recipients by ensuring that marriage does not result in loss or reduction of benefits.

2. Reform income and resource limits so that spouses  earnings do not automatically disqualify disabled individuals from necessary support.

3. Protect the financial independence of disabled individuals while allowing them to build a life with a partner without fear of economic punishment.

By signing this petition, we demand that congress take immediate action to uphold the rights of disabled individuals and allow them the freedom to marry without unnecessary financial consequences.
