Stop pathway behind Cranbrook Dr for preservation of ecosystem and protection of wildife.
The Issue
Brookfield plans to build a pathway on the escarpment behind Cranbrook Drive as part of a larger commitment to The City to build pathways in the area. For many people, this escarpment represents a rare and pristine ecosystem found within our city limits, rich in plant biodiversity and wildlife that many want to protect. Furthermore, the slope has shown fragility in some areas where the hill has slipped or where the underground springs have surfaced, making both underground and overland water a concern for maintaining the integrity of the slope. This is particularly concerning for many residents who back onto the escarpment.
This area in question is classified as an Environment Reserve by The City and according to them, “is considered a natural habitat that is not maintained, protected for biodiversity, wildlife, and native plants, protected as a natural buffer for water quality, etc., and is not meant for active space use but should be respected and protected as such". Furthermore, encroachment has been a persistent issue in Calgary communities and The City does not want citizens altering environmentally significant areas that have been intentionally left in its natural state to preserve ecosystems, promote biodiversity, and protect native plant species, slopes, and marsh land. Why has The City approved a project that will go against their own environmental agenda by building a pathway through an environmentally significant area? Please consider signing this petition to preserve the natural habitat, maintain slope stability and prevent the further narrowing of the Fish Creek wildlife corridor for the protection of the wildlife.
