Historic Downtown Fernandina Beach, with its rich history and charismatic local shops, has always been a haven for both residents and tourists seeking a taste of authentic small-town charm. It's a place where people feel at home, gather for community events, and support local businesses that rely on the unique and inviting atmosphere of our beloved community.

However, the City Commission is considering a proposal that could threaten this atmosphere and disrupt our way of life—implementing a paid parking system by October 2025. For small business owners, this decision could lead to devastating consequences. Many shops and restaurants in our historic downtown area survive on the ease and accessibility currently provided by the free parking arrangement. Introducing parking fees could deter both locals and visitors alike, potentially driving them to other areas where they can park freely.

This move would not only impact businesses but also diminish the unique feel of our town. The informal, welcoming nature of Fernandina Beach is one of its greatest assets, and imposing paid parking threatens to replace our neighborhood's warmth with the burdens of commercial bureaucracy. Once the small-town charm is gone, it's irreplaceable and will forever alter the fabric of our community.

Statistically, cities implementing paid parking in similar areas have seen a decline in local customers and a drop in sales for small businesses.  Commercial areas that transition to paid parking often see increased congestion in non-commercial areas, as drivers attempt to avoid fees. This can lead to frustration among residents and further harm the community's cohesion.

We need to urge the City Commission to reconsider this proposal and seek alternative solutions that would allow our downtown to flourish without introducing paid parking. Possible alternatives include investing in better public transportation options to ease parking demand, establishing a more efficient parking system without fees, or developing partnerships with private parking lots to offer residents and visitors viable options.

Maintaining the essence of Historic Downtown Fernandina Beach should be our priority. We urge you to stand with us in preserving the unique character and sustaining the economic vitality of our community. Sign this petition today to oppose the implementation of paid parking and protect the heart of Fernandina Beach. Together, we can keep our town authentic, welcoming, and thriving.
