Stop paid parking for Beverly residents in their city
The Issue
Petition for Resident Parking Reform in Beverly, Massachusetts
Living in the heart of downtown Beverly, particularly along Cabot Street, comes with many benefits—but it also comes with a major frustration: residents are required to pay hourly for parking in their own neighborhood.
Imagine it’s pouring rain. You have a trunk full of groceries and are searching for a space in an already overcrowded residential parking zone. After circling the block, you give up and park in front of your own building on Cabot Street just long enough to carry your groceries upstairs. By the time you’ve made several trips and finally get inside, you realize you forgot to pay the meter. When you return to your car, there’s a $25 parking ticket on your windshield.
Now imagine the same situation in the middle of winter, when snow bans eliminate even more parking options. What should be a simple task becomes an exhausting and expensive ordeal.
Beverly’s current parking policies place unnecessary financial and logistical burdens on the people who actually live here. Residents parking on major streets such as Cabot and Rantoul must pay $1.00 per hour. Municipal lots charge $0.50 per hour, but these lots are often filled by visitors and Cabot Theatre patrons, leaving little room for nearby residents. Failure to pay results in a $25 fine, penalizing the very people who should have the easiest access to parking near their homes.
While some residential parking zones offer free parking, they are too small to accommodate the number of residents living in downtown and other high-traffic neighborhoods. The current system simply does not meet the needs of the community.
It is time for the City of Beverly to re-evaluate its parking policies. A practical solution would be to introduce a resident parking permit that allows Beverly residents to park free of charge in city-owned metered spaces or designated areas throughout the city. This would ease the financial burden on residents, reduce unnecessary stress, and make daily life more manageable for those who call Beverly home.
Many cities across the United States have implemented resident parking permit programs that balance the needs of residents, businesses, and visitors. Beverly has the opportunity to modernize its parking policies and create a system that better serves the people who live here.
By signing this petition, you are supporting a fairer parking system that puts Beverly residents first. Let’s encourage our city officials to adopt resident-friendly parking solutions that improve quality of life while maintaining a vibrant downtown for everyone.
Please sign this petition and help bring meaningful, common-sense parking reform to Beverly.
