Stop Overbuilding in Maple Valley Until Our Infrastructure and Economy Can Sustain It!

The Issue

We, the residents of Maple Valley and surrounding communities, respectfully ask the Maple Valley City Council and King County Planning Commission to pause approval of large new housing developments — including the Glenshire Park Preliminary Plat — until our city’s infrastructure, emergency services, and economy can safely support the current and projected population.

This is not about stopping growth. It’s about ensuring that growth happens responsibly, sustainably, and in a way that protects the well-being of current and future residents.

Community Concerns:

1. Healthcare Access

Public records confirm that MultiCare Covington Medical Center closed its maternity ward in 2022 due to capacity and staffing limits. Nearby hospitals already serve large populations, and residents are concerned that adding hundreds of new households could place additional strain on emergency and medical services.

2. Transportation and Traffic Safety

Roads like SR-18 and Kent-Kangley (272nd) are already heavily congested. Residents experience long delays exiting neighborhoods during peak hours, raising concerns about both daily congestion and emergency vehicle access.

3. Environmental and Neighborhood Impact

The mature trees and natural buffers surrounding existing homes provide essential environmental benefits — reducing runoff, filtering air, and maintaining livability. Removing these for new construction could increase noise, surface water runoff, and air pollution, while permanently altering the character of our community.

4. Strain on Local Resources

Maple Valley’s population growth has outpaced the expansion of schools, roads, utilities, and healthcare systems. Infrastructure investment should come before additional large-scale housing projects to ensure the community remains safe, efficient, and livable for all.

Our Requests:

We respectfully urge the Maple Valley City Council and King County Planning Commission to:

  • Pause or deny new large-scale developments until updated public studies confirm that infrastructure, healthcare, and transportation systems can support further growth.
  • Require an environmental buffer and tree barrier between new construction and existing homes.
  • Mandate a detailed, funded traffic and safety plan be implemented before approving any large development.

Why It Matters:

Maple Valley has always been known for balance — progress paired with preservation, and growth supported by strong community infrastructure. Residents believe that balance is now at risk.

We support growth that improves our community, not growth that overwhelms it. Responsible planning protects everyone — families, local businesses, and the city’s long-term stability.

Unchecked overbuilding threatens to overwhelm our infrastructure, diminish safety, and erode the very character that makes Maple Valley a place people are proud to call home.
