Stop Open Pit Development on the South Ridge near Shoal Cove Beach
Stop Open Pit Development on the South Ridge near Shoal Cove Beach
The Issue
Many residents of St. Lawrence are deeply concerned about the prospect of open pit mining on Shoal Cove Ridge.
This proposed development is located only two kilometres from our town and directly above Shoal Cove, a beautiful and valued beach area frequented by local residents and countless tourists every year.
For generations, this area has provided people with peace, recreation, and a close connection to nature just moments from their homes. The introduction of open pit mining would permanently alter this landscape and destroy a place that holds deep meaning for many in our community.
There is also understandable concern regarding dust and environmental impact. The mining history of St. Lawrence carries painful memories for many families. The dust that harmed and claimed the lives of so many of our forefathers remains part of this town’s history and collective memory. Residents do not want to see our community exposed once again to the risks and long-term consequences associated with large-scale mining operations so close to where people live, walk, fish, and gather.
We understand the importance of employment and economic opportunity, but development should not come at the cost of our health, environment, tourism, and quality of life. Once this ridge is altered, it can never truly be restored.
