The Issue

Parking in Ontario, CA has become an unaffordable burden for low-income residents like myself. Once an easily manageable aspect of daily life, it has turned into a luxury many of us simply cannot afford due to the recently approved 'Citywide Street Sweeping Parking Restrictions Program,' as defined by Ontario Municipal Code Section 4-6.1019(c). Despite its aim to reduce trash and debris from clogging storm drains, the reality around here speaks otherwise.

Let me share my personal experience. As a low-income resident, I barely make ends meet. Unfortunately, I recently received a parking ticket simply because I was forced to park on the street during designated restrictions. It's a ticket I couldn't afford to pay, and I'm not alone in this struggle. Many of my neighbors, particularly those residing in high-poverty areas, share this financial strain. We are unfairly taxed for parking in front of our own homes – a burden that should not rest on those struggling the most.

Data from the city's own reports reveal that the introduction of these restrictions has not significantly improved the cleanliness of our streets, and yet, it continues to punish us financially. The streets are still littered, showing negligible improvement, which defeats the purpose of the regulation altogether. It is not just ironic but genuinely disheartening to see such a policy enforced without consideration for its actual impact on both the environment and the community.

The truth is, the City of Ontario has other options for addressing pollution and trash management without disproportionately burdening its residents. Alternative solutions, such as increased public education about waste management, improved infrastructure like more efficient waste collection services, or even engaging community service volunteer projects to keep neighborhoods clean, could be explored.

The city has the power and the choice to implement regulations that reflect both environmental responsibility and compassion for its residents. Ontario must prioritize methods that do not cripple its most vulnerable residents financially.

Let's come together to call upon the Ontario City Council to take immediate action to either repeal or propose amendments to this section of the municipal code. It’s time to rethink how we maintain our streets—solutions exist that do not involve unfair penalties for residents who are merely trying to live their lives with dignity. Sign this petition today to advocate for a fair and balanced approach to street sweeping and parking regulations in Ontario, CA.
