Stop offshore detention for harmless refugees
Stop offshore detention for harmless refugees
The issue
We are children in school and believe it is absolutely ridiculous that something against the law is still used in our country! In Australia, our treatment of refugees has become a matter of international concern. Currently, our government enforces offshore detention for those seeking asylum, regardless of their history. This practice continues unless a refugee is proven violent or charged with serious offenses, a standard that seems inconsistent with an understanding of human rights and compassion.
Offshore detention, primarily located in places like Nauru and Manus Island, intends to process refugees. However, these facilities have been criticised by human rights organizations worldwide for their dire living conditions. Reports from Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have highlighted issues such as inadequate healthcare, poor sanitation, and abuse within these detention centers. These conditions are not only unfit but also harmful to those who have already endured significant trauma.
According to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), our current policies violate commitments under international law, specifically the Refugee Convention, to which Australia is a signatory. The convention outlines that refugees should not be penalized for seeking asylum.
Instead of subjecting these individuals to inhumane conditions, we propose a more compassionate approach: that offshore detention be reserved only for those proven violent or involved in serious criminal activities beyond simple theft. This will reduce harm and align our policies with global standards of treating refugees with dignity.
Consider the real stories of people affected by these practices: individuals fleeing war, persecution, or natural disasters only to be met with further adversity in detention. Many of these refugees include families with young children who deserve a chance at a peaceful life. We call for change, not just because it's right, but because as students, we envision a country that leads with empathy and respect for human rights.
Join us in urging the government to amend its policies and cease the offshore detention of harmless refugees. By signing this petition, you endorse a future where compassion and justice prevail. Help us build a society that reflects the values we are taught in school: fairness, kindness, and a commitment to human welfare. Please sign and share widely!
