Stop Obscene Skyscraper Construction in Downtown Sarasota

The Issue

Petition to Oppose Approval by the City of Sarasota of Administrative Site Plan Application No. 23-ASP-02, Proposed Obsidian Condominium, 1260-1274 North Palm Ave., Sarasota, Florida

The below hereby acknowledge their opposition to the above proposed skyscraper condominium building for some of the following reasons:

  • Violates IV-506 Zoning Code Appendix D and the Sarasota Downtown Master Plan in the areas of height, lot coverage, setback, mass, scale, quality of life and compatibility.
  • The massive 342-foot structure will be more than 100 feet taller than any other existing building in downtown Sarasota.
  • It will be far out of proportion in design, height and comparability with neighboring buildings.
  • It will require demolition of seven existing retail businesses, replace by only one, thus reducing retail space by 86%
  • The tiny site, barely over1/4 acre, will present safety risks during construction.
  • After completion, the massive structure could result in damage to existing neighboring buildings during tropical storms and/or hurricanes.
