This week I attended a town hall meeting on Local Law 97 in the Little Neck area of Queens. Hundreds of people were in the audience. As I looked around the audience again and again - in front of me, on both sides and in back of me I noticed that at last 97 percent of the audience were people in their 50's, 60's, and 70's.

This is really affecting a certain demographic of the population, I though, judging from the audience. The elderly population - yes those on a fixed income and probably a lot with medical problems will be disproportionately affected when this law goes into effect in 2024. Where are they supposed to go once their maintenance/assessments rises astronomically and they can't afford to live where they are living? There will be no affordable housing for many of them. We can't assume that all of them will move in with their kids or move to Florida. LL97 is just plain cruel to a lot of senior citizens and causing a lot of them to panic.

Are most City Council members aware of that? Is City Hall aware of that? Is the general public aware of that?

(Most of the meeting the speakers were going into detail about Local Law 97. ) Two Council Members Vickie Paladino, who had introduced a bill to postpone the date that Local Law 97 goes into effect and Linda Lee who introduced a bill that exempts garden apartment coops from Local Law 97 also spoke. They spoke of the need to get a majority of Council Members on board with their respective bills.
