Stop NSW Government Support for the Mockery of Christianity
The issue
As a Catholic, a Christian, a father, and a NSW taxpayer, I am deeply saddened and angered by the existence of Unholy Playhouse and its apparent association with Create NSW.
This is not simply a nightclub. Its branding deliberately uses Christian symbols, language and themes in a way that many Christians reasonably see as mocking Jesus Christ, the Cross, and our faith. What is sacred to billions of people around the world has been turned into entertainment and commercial marketing.
I accept that not everyone shares my beliefs, and I support freedom of expression. However, there is a significant difference between allowing a private business to operate and having the NSW Government associated with it in any official capacity.
What has shocked me most is seeing Create NSW acknowledged on the venue's website. Whether that association is through funding, sponsorship, partnership or another form of government support, I believe it is completely inappropriate. The NSW Government should not be connected in any way with a venue that many Christians perceive as ridiculing their faith.
Australia is a nation that rightly values diversity, inclusion and respect. Yet many Christians feel that when our faith is mocked, it is often dismissed as acceptable. Christians deserve the same dignity and respect as every other faith community.
This petition is not about hatred or revenge. It is about accountability, equal treatment, and respect. We are asking the NSW Government to demonstrate that no religion should be treated with contempt while carrying the endorsement or support of the people of New South Wales.
What we are asking for
We respectfully call on the NSW Government to:
- Issue a formal public apology to the Christian community for any official association with Unholy Playhouse.
- Immediately cease any government funding, sponsorship, partnership, or other official support connected with the venue.
- Conduct an independent review into how this decision was made and why the venue was considered appropriate for government support.
- Publish the findings of that review so the public can understand the decision-making process.
- Review Create NSW's funding policies to ensure taxpayer money is never used to support projects that mock, ridicule, or demean any religion or faith community.
I also pray for those involved in creating and promoting this venue. My hope is that one day they come to know Jesus Christ and recognise why so many Christians have been deeply hurt by what has been created.
If you believe governments should treat all religions with equal respect and that taxpayer money should never be associated with the mockery of any faith, I ask you to stand with us and sign this petition.
