Stop Northampton's move to three-weekly bin collections

The Issue

I am deeply concerned about the recent proposal to move to three-weekly bin collections in Northampton. While I understand that councils have financial constraints and aim to improve recycling, extending the period between waste collections could lead to numerous problems for our community.

First and foremost, not everyone has the space to store rubbish for such an extended duration—especially families with children. Many residents in Northampton live in properties with limited storage space, which makes it impractical to hold onto waste for three weeks. This could lead to an increase in fly-tipping, as residents will no longer be able to manage their waste responsibly and will be forced to find alternative methods of disposal.

Moreover, the hygiene risks associated with this proposal are concerning. Longer intervals between collections mean waste will linger longer, inevitably attracting pests such as rats, mice, and insects. These pests not only pose a health threat to our community but also lead to costly extermination efforts that many citizens cannot afford.

There is also the broader environmental impact to consider. Increased fly-tipping and improperly managed waste will degrade our beautiful local environment and harm wildlife. Instead of enhancing our recycling efforts, this change might counteract them by leading to more irresponsible waste management.

We urge the Northampton Council to reconsider this decision and consult with the community to find a balanced approach that addresses both financial constraints and the well-being of residents. Perhaps introducing incentives for improved recycling, enhancing current recycling education and facilities, or offering more frequent recycling collections could be viable alternatives that do not compromise our community’s cleanliness or safety.

Please join me in signing this petition to advocate for the health and cleanliness of our community and to urge the council to make a more thoughtful decision regarding waste collection. Your voice can make a difference. Sign now to protect Northampton's future!
