Stop Netflix from acquiring Warner Bros and HBO Max
The Issue
I personally own several hundred dollars’ worth of movies and TV shows made by Warner Bros and HBO Max. My heart aches at the thought that my investment and passion for these captivating creations could be compromised if Netflix proceeds with its proposed $82 billion acquisition. My concern isn't just about losing what I own; it's about how Netflix's apparent market strategy may impact every one of us who loves these franchises.
Netflix, though popular, has shown a pattern of acquiring major entertainment franchises only to leave loyal consumers out in the cold. Take Avatar: The Last Airbender, for instance. It's a show I absolutely cherish, yet Netflix's handling has been disheartening, to say the least. They spent $120 million just to produce one season in six years without any signs of continuing it. This kind of neglect raises serious questions about their approach to content ownership, where consumers are thrust into a cycle of renting rather than owning, essentially erasing the bonds we've formed with shows and movies over time.
Furthermore, this acquisition poses a significant threat to the entertainment industry's diversity and creativity. Netflix's potential monopoly could lead to a homogeneous entertainment landscape where unique voices are drowned out by a singular corporate agenda. Warner Bros and HBO Max have been pioneers in creating diverse, bold, and innovative content. If they fall into Netflix's hands, we risk losing that uniqueness.
The local and global communities depending on real access to Warner Bros and HBO Max content deserve the right to retain ownership, to continue celebrating, and supporting the stories they love without having to face artificial scarcity and subscription traps. We cannot allow Netflix to strip away the freedom of choice from us viewers, turning what we could own into yet another never-ending subscription service.
Help us keep the integrity and autonomy of our entertainment industry intact. Let us stand together to prevent Netflix from completing this acquisition that threatens both consumer rights and the creative spirit that these studios represent. Join me in taking action by signing this petition. Your voice matters and together, we can make a difference.
