Sahtú MLA, Danny McNeely requested a petition in order to bring these issues forward to the GNWT Legislature to garner support for change.

We the undersigned call upon the Government of the Northwest Territories to take immediate action regarding the ongoing neglect of our elders within the Sahtú Dene Nechà Ko Long Term Care Facility in Norman Wells.

Background:

The NWT Health and Social Services Authority in the Sahtú Region have repeatedly failed to ensure adequate care, dignity, and respect for our elders and for the health care system.

Reports Indicate:

Cases of elder neglect including inadequate medical attention and indignant living conditions.

Lack of accountability within management, leading to a failure in oversight and implementation of necessary reforms.

Voices of families and community members being ignored, despite formal complaints and calls for better services.

Our Demands:

Immediate investigation into cases of elder neglect, including external independent oversight.

Removal and replacement of management responsible for these failures, ensuring leadership that prioritizes elder care and transparency.

Establishment of a public consultation process where elders, families, and advocates can provide direct input on necessary reforms.

A commitment to action for better funding and staffing for elder care services in the Sahtu region
