Petition updateStop Needless Euthanization FCDS, Columbus , OhioCHICKEN I regret to inform you that CHICKEN is dead, KILLED at FCDS

Dogs Last Chance Guardian Angels group

Apr 27, 2018
We save one from the euth list and then one from the adoption floor is killed without being offered to rescue.
CHICKEN was euthed tonight at Don Winstel’s orders.
There is something wrong at the shelter when dogs pass all the testing to make it to the adoption floor only to be euthanized. Why is this happening at such an alarming rate?

Don’s email:
“Please let the volunteers know that Chicken was re-evaluated after his declining cage behavior was noted by staff and volunteers. While being allowed some “off leash” time in an exercise pen to provide him an opportunity to burn off some energy, he charged a staff person snarling, then seriously redirected on his loose leash. When a second individual went to assist and attempted to place a second leash on him, he went for that leash and caught a finger, as well. Chicken was able to be distracted with a treat allowing leashing (lassoing) to be completed and he was lead into the building and back to his run on two taught leashes. Once in the kennel, one leash was removed by hand, but the other required a leash hook to remove from Chicken and extract from the kennel. Chicken had been returned to the shelter after five days on April 19 due to his lunging at the family’s 4 year old child, but, since his assessments here had not been able to replicate those behaviors, he was placed on the adoption floor with a “no kids” notation. Sadly, in light of behaviors noted today and those observed by the adopters, Chicken will be humanely euthanized this evening.
I sincerely sympathize with those volunteers and staff who spent time with Chicken during his two short stays here. Your frustration is shared by all of us, especially in instances like this where a dog like Chicken makes it onto the adoption floor and is even adopted, but whose eventual outcome is poor.
Thank you for all you do for the dogs.
Don"
