The Issue

Students in the Kings Canyon Unified School District are being unfairly affected by the requirement to provide a doctor’s note to excuse absences due to illness.
This policy creates unnecessary barriers for students and their families, especially when dealing with physical or mental health challenges. Not every family can afford or access a doctor’s visit each time a student is unwell.
If this policy is changed, it will allow parents and guardians to more easily excuse their child’s absence when they are sick or struggling with mental health without facing negative academic consequences. This is crucial because unexcused absences can lead to lost credit for classes and students being referred to SARB (Student Attendance Review Board).
We urge the district to revise this policy to better support student well-being and success
