Stop NASA Cuts: Reinstate Science & Strategy Offices

Stop NASA Cuts: Reinstate Science & Strategy Offices
The Issue
This week, following the Executive Order of President Trump, NASA has shut down its Office of the Chief Scientist (OCS) and Office of Technology, Policy, and Strategy (OTPS).
It was done as part of a broader effort to comply with budget cuts and a government order to reduce its workforce.
This decision led to the dismissal of Dr. Katherine Calvin, NASA’s Chief Scientist, and eliminated key offices that advised on climate research, scientific priorities, and long-term technology planning.
Without these offices, NASA’s ability to make informed decisions on space exploration, innovation, and global collaboration is at serious risk.
Why This Matters:
Undermining Science: The OCS ensured NASA’s missions were grounded in strong scientific research, including climate studies. Without it, key projects could lose direction.
No Clear Strategy: The OTPS helped guide NASA’s technology and policy decisions. Cutting it means less informed choices on space exploration, innovation, and global partnerships.
Losing Our Edge: NASA’s reputation as a world leader depends on smart planning and cutting-edge science. Weakening these offices puts the U.S. at risk of falling behind.
Keeping Space Public: NASA should not rely entirely on private companies — government leadership is essential and must be protected.
NASA should be advancing science, not dismantling the very offices that ensure its success.
