The Issue

My name is Jianna and I’m reaching out to everyone in our community because something urgent demands our collective attention and action. The constant spraying of mosquitoes here in the Charleston, SC and surrounding area, is causing havoc on our local ecosystems. While the intention might be to control mosquito populations and the diseases they spread, this practice is indiscriminately affecting much more than its target.

The pesticides used in mosquito control are not selective; they kill all insects in their path, leading to a cascade of negative effects throughout the ecosystem. Essential pollinators like bees and butterflies, which our local flora relies on, are dying. Birds and bats that feed on these insects are losing their food sources, leading to a dwindling populations.

With each spray, we are not just removing mosquitoes but severely damaging the interconnected life forms in our environment. This has immediate and future consequences for our local biodiversity and ecological health. For instance, bees, which are crucial for pollination, are already in decline globally, and such practices exacerbate their plight. Without them, our agricultural produce and natural plant life are at risk. When is the last time you have seen a lightning bug?

Not only is our wildlife suffering, but human health is also at stake. Research indicates that exposure to these pesticides can have adverse health effects on humans, ranging from minor ailments to serious chronic conditions. The community's overall well-being is jeopardized with continued exposure to these harmful substances. They spray at night (for the bees) but also when people are sleeping and unaware.

A balanced approach to mosquito management could include leaving more habitat for mosquito predators, public education on preventing mosquito breeding, and encouraging natural predators by introducing bat boxes. These are just some solutions and offer humane/effective control without damaging our environment or putting our health at risk.

Now, more than ever, we need to advocate for responsible and sustainable policies that protect all life forms. Sign this petition to urge the Charleston County Commissioner to re-evaluate and change our mosquito control strategies immediately, prioritizing eco-friendly and health-conscious alternatives. Together, we can make a difference in safeguarding our precious ecosystem and the health of our community. Please add your voice to this important cause by signing the petition today.
