Stop Morocco's Cruel Stray Dog Cull Before the 2030 FIFA World Cup

Stop Morocco's Cruel Stray Dog Cull Before the 2030 FIFA World Cup
The Issue
We express our grave concern over Morocco's decision to cull up to three million stray dogs ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, a event they will co-host with Spain and Portugal. This mass extermination is not only inhumane but also ineffective and in violation of animal welfare standards worldwide. It's estimated that killing stray dogs doesn't solve the overpopulation issue.
The NSPCA has stated: In an effort to disguise their deplorable actions, Moroccan authorities have justified their killing sprees as an attempt to control the spread of rabies. This despite the World Health Organization stating that “there is no evidence that removal of dogs alone has ever had a significant impact on dog population densities or the spread of rabies.” We publicly extend our support to all organizations and individuals taking a stand against this practice.
This involves:
- Poisoning: Dogs are poisoned with strychnine, either by direct injection or through contaminated food.
- Mass Shootings: Government-mandated gunmen patrol day and night, shooting dogs indiscriminately. Many suffer slow, agonizing deaths, and their bodies are often left to decompose.
- Barbaric Traps: Dogs are trapped in cruel clamps and thrown into trucks, destined for “fake dispensaries” where they are burned alive in incinerators or dumped in mass graves. Many are not dead when buried.
We urge the Moroccan government to consider humane methods of controlling the stray dog population, such as resonance based technologies for rabies. Let's align the excitement of the World Cup with a compassionate approach towards animals. We call upon individuals, animal advocates, and football fans worldwide: demand an end to this unethical dog cull and join us in urging Morocco to adopt humane alternatives.
This violence is occurring in public, witnessed by children, citizens, and tourists. The United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child has expressed concern about the harmful effects of children being exposed to such violence. On September 18th, 2023, they issued General Comment 26, stating: “Children must be protected from all forms of physical and psychological violence and from exposure to violence, such as domestic violence and violence inflicted on animals.”
