We, the undersigned residents and taxpayers of Los Angeles, respectfully submit this petition to express our strong opposition to the allocation of city resources—specifically, the reassignment of Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers—to provide personal security for former Vice President Kamala Harris following the expiration of her Secret Service protection.

Background
Federal law provides former vice presidents with six months of Secret Service protection after leaving office. Kamala Harris’s protection expired on July 21, 2025. Although former President Joe Biden extended her protection via executive order, President Donald Trump rescinded that extension.

In response, the LAPD and California Highway Patrol (CHP) have reassigned up to 14 officers from active duty—including crime suppression units in high-need areas such as the San Fernando Valley—to serve as Harris’s personal security detail. This reassignment coincides with Harris’s multi-city book tour promoting her memoir, 107 Days, and her decision *not to run for California governor in 2026.

Our Demands

Require Harris to fund her own private security, as is customary for former officials without federal protection.
Conduct a public audit of all costs associated with this security arrangement.
Reassign LAPD officers back to their original duties serving the communities of Los Angeles.
