The Issue

The government and governing bodies of the institutions in charge of the rafting industry in Portland, Jamaica, specifically rafting on the Rio Grande River, have sat back and observed the mining company located at Burlington, Snow Hill, Portland, completely change and disrupt the natural flow of the river, the natural ecosystem of the river, as well as the rafting adventure for local and international guests.
These mining practices have been in effect for the past two consecutive years, which is far too long for any one company to be operating, and by extension, altering the lives of locals who benefit from the river.

This is important because when the dry season comes, the entire rafting industry may come to a halt as the water levels have receded immensely over the past two years with the mining activities in effect.
There is little to no ecosystem for the organisms in the river to survive on, which leads to no fish being in the river, no crayfish, no bussu and no janga also available for community members to benefit from. Fishermen have to seek an alternative means of earning a living, likewise the raft captains are not able to sail the full length of the river as the water level is extremely low.
When a guest sails on the river in hopes of enjoying the peaceful vibe of the rafting experience, they are met with disappointment along the journey as they witness excavators digging for sand in the stream the raft would sail to load multiple dump trucks that are on standby on a daily basis.
For the betterment of the community, the culture, the ecosystem and the tourism industry, the mining of the Rio Grande River in Portland, Jamaica has to come to a halt once and for all.
