Stop Millburn’s Seasonal Ban on 2-Stroke Gas-Powered Blowers!
The Issue
To: The Millburn Town Committee
From: Concerned Residents, Landscapers, and Business Owners of Millburn
We, the undersigned, strongly oppose the Environmental Commission’s proposed seasonal ban on 2-stroke gas-powered blowers in Millburn, NJ. This proposal is being pushed forward despite outdated emissions data and shifting justifications that fail to address the real impact on our community.
Why We Oppose This Ban
🔹 Unnecessary Financial Burden – This ban would force landscapers, businesses, residence and even the Department of Public Works (DPW) to purchase costly alternative equipment just to comply with local rules for 3 short months. Other communities that have implemented bans have seen their annual maintenance costs increase by over 40%.
🔹 Minimal Noise Reduction – The focus of this ban recently shifted from emissions to noise concerns. However, during the proposed restriction period (summer months), 2-stroke blowers are already the least used tool, making the ban ineffective. Landscapers are also willing to adjust their usage to minimize disruption.
🔹 State Legislation is Already in Progress – Neighboring towns are holding off on local bans, waiting to see if the state bill (S-217) regulating the sale of this equipment moves forward. Imposing a local ban now is premature and an unnecessary overreach.
🔹 Better Solutions Exist – Instead of banning equipment, the town should work collaboratively with landscapers and homeowners on alternative solutions such as limited usage hours, power adjustments, or incentive programs for quieter and more efficient tools.
Join Us in Standing Against This Unfair Ban!
We urge the Millburn Town Committee to reject this proposal and find more balanced solutions that support both environmental goals and local businesses.
