Stop Memphis DA From Protecting Criminals
The Issue
The Memphis Safe Task Force, which was created to finally tackle the horrific crime plaguing Memphis streets, has made over 10,000 arrests since late September. Memphis families fought for this crackdown to make one of the most dangerous cities in America safer to live in.
Memphis residents demanded accountability. Shelby County State Senator Brent Taylor and Memphis State Representative John Gillespie championed it, passing two laws requiring Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy's office to publicly report every task force case it reduces, dismisses, or settles — every 10 days, on the record.
Mulroy filed a lawsuit on May 26 to kill those laws before they could take effect.
The people of Memphis asked for transparency. Their DA went to court to take it away.
Mulroy doesn't want that reporting to exist.
Transparency in law enforcement isn't a political issue. It's the foundation of public trust. When a DA sues to block a basic reporting requirement, every resident has the right to ask why. What is he afraid people will find out?
Memphis families should not have to wonder which criminals walked. They should not have to guess how many task force cases got quietly dropped or settled. That's what this law gives them: a simple answer, on the record, every 10 days.
Join us in calling on DA Mulroy to drop his lawsuit and comply with the law. Our community's safety depends on accountability, and accountability starts with transparency.
