Stop media censorship!
Stop media censorship!
The Issue
Just now, I was invited to sign a petition on this site - "Editor Who Blamed Lara Logan for Her Gang Rape Must Go". I actually visited the site with the intention of signing it - it wounds worthy, certainly. But then I read the article itself, and thought more about it, and I realized something important. Yes, Rottenberg is a pig, and I absolutely disagree with what he said. I think he is completely wrong, and frankly he really shouldn't be saying things like that, and yet... although I disagree with what he said, I will defend to the death his right to say it!
Attempting to have someone, a writer, removed for espousing unacceptable views is a terrible blow against everything the free world - emphasis on free, as in free speech - stands for. Let's take a look at some of the other countries who have followed similar policies, for example china: Does that sound like a success story for journalistic integrity? Certainly, only 'acceptable' articles are permitted to be written... is that what you want? A totalitarian, fascist regime? Not I! I want every man, woman, and idiot to have the right to their two cents... and any magazine to have the right to publish them, no matter how repugnant their sentiments may be.
It is to that end I am calling on change.org itself to boycott petitions advocating censorship of any kind. I want the administrators of change.org to remove from their site the aforementioned "Editor Who Blamed..." petition, and block any future petitions that want to censor or restrain anyone from writing, or publishing, whatever they may want to.
