The Issue

Dear Michigan Department of Transportation,

We request that you halt the proposed project to build a six to eight foot tall steel fence along the railroad on West Huron River Drive in Ann Arbor.

We would like to see data on the evidence of the need for such a fence in this location. There have been no deaths and no reported near misses on this 2.5 mile stretch of track.

We also propose that any such fence, if deemed necessary for human safety based on data, should include several overpasses for wildlife and people to minimize disruption.

These requests are being made because we believe that this fence would have a number of negative impacts on the community, including:

  1. Disrupting wildlife habitat. The Huron River is home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, rabbits, and birds. The fence would block their access to food and water, and it could also lead to injuries or deaths.
  2. Using state funds to benefit private companies. The railroad that runs along West Huron River Drive is mainly used by private companies, such as freight trains. The state should not be using taxpayer money to build a fence that primarily benefits these companies. They should be paying for the costs to keep us safe.
  3. Limiting access to the Huron River, which is a major asset for Ann Arbor and a popular spot for recreation. Creating a barrier between the community and the railroad, which would make it more difficult for people to walk or bike along the river.
  4. Decreases Safety: This fence would make it more difficult for emergency responders to access the area in the event of an accident.
  5. Detracting from the natural beauty of the area. The steel fence would be a stark contrast to the trees and vegetation along the river, and it would create a sense of isolation and division.
  6. Blocking Bike and walking trails: MDOT has failed to work with the Border to Border bike trail project, not statement issued how they have taken this project into consideration. Also, this proposed fence would  block existing walking trails that are much safer than walking on West Huron River Drive.
    ALTERNATIVE:

We propose that any such fence, if deemed necessary for human safety based on data, should include several overpasses for wildlife and people to minimize disruption.

We urge you to reconsider the proposed project and to find a more sustainable and effective way to address the safety concerns that have been raised. Thank you for your time and consideration.
