The Issue
I am a UK citizen fed up with paying car taxes that seem to vanish into thin air, while our roads increasingly resemble patches from a war zone. Every time I drive, the threat of hitting a pothole weighs on me—not only risking damage to my vehicle but also my safety and that of my loved ones. Despite paying significant amounts in car taxes annually, it's no wonder frustration is growing among us drivers when the issues persist and appear to be deteriorating by the day.
The funds raised from UK road taxes are meant to ensure the upkeep and maintenance of our roads, yet it is clear that this is not happening effectively. In 2021 alone, an estimated £7.1 billion was collected from vehicle excise duties, a staggering sum that must be accounted for. However, statistics reveal that the UK is falling behind in road maintenance compared to our European counterparts. According to the Asphalt Industry Alliance, approximately £10.8 billion is needed to bring our roads back to a satisfactory state.
Potholes not only create massive inconvenience but lead to substantial economic consequences as well. The RAC reported in 2021 that drivers were losing over £100 million due to vehicle damage from poorly maintained roads. It’s not just a financial strain but also an environmental concern, as the wear and tear on vehicles increases emissions.
We demand transparency and accountability for the vehicle taxes collected from hard-working citizens like myself. These funds should be dedicated solely to road improvement projects. I urge the UK government and the Department for Transport to implement stricter regulations and provide regular reports on how our taxes are being used. We deserve roads that reflect the investment we make.
Join me in holding our authorities accountable and pressuring them to prioritize fixing our roads for the safety, comfort, and financial relief of all UK drivers. Sign this petition and let us bring attention to the urgent need for better roads in our country.
