The Issue

High school is supposed to be a time of self-expression, new beginnings, and fun experiences. For students in Phenix City, AL, the recent mandate requiring clear book bags and the banning of belt bags is not just unwanted but incredibly irritating. These new rules strip away our freedom of expression, a fundamental right we are granted in the United States.

Replacing personal book bags with clear ones might seem like a small change, but it takes away from the individuality and creativity that students bring to school every day. Book bags are more than just a means to carry books; they’re a canvas for personal expression. They allow students to display their personality, interests, and stylistic choices. On the other hand, belt bags have become a part of many students' daily outfits, reflecting not just fashion trends but also personal style. Their removal is a violation of our freedom to express ourselves.

Additionally, these policies claim to enhance safety and regulate cellphone usage, but they might not be the most effective solutions. Instead of focusing on clear bags, schools should encourage a more open dialogue with students about safety and technology use. By placing more trust in students, there is a greater chance they will act responsibly, making strict, intrusive policies less necessary.

We urge the Phenix City School Board to reconsider these policies and engage with students to find solutions that align with both safety objectives and students' rights to freedom of expression. Phenix City schools should be environments where students feel free to express themselves while also feeling safe.

Sign this petition to stand up for our rights and demand a change that aligns with both safety and freedom in our learning environment. Let's work together to make high school a place of self-discovery and expression.
