Stop mandatory AVID 12 for seniors at Jefferson High School

Stop mandatory AVID 12 for seniors at Jefferson High School
The Issue
Hello! I’m an upcoming senior at Jefferson High School in Portland, Oregon. I, like many of my classmates, have completed my required AVID 11 course and worked to fulfill all necessary graduation requirements. The administration assured us that, having done this, AVID would not be required for seniors. Now, it is not only recommended, but mandatory.
This is not a Portland Public Schools requirement. Other PPS high schools don’t force students to take AVID 12, so why shouldn't Jefferson be the same? It's simply not fair to continue burdening students with mandatory courses they were promised they wouldn't have to attend, especially after completing necessary requirements.
Students who have already shown their readiness for life after high school with completed My Plans, resumes, CRLE’s, and more, should not be forced into taking AVID 12. AVID should be an option, especially when it doesn’t align with individual educational goals or personal preparedness.
We are asking the administration of Jefferson High School to allow AVID 12 to be an opt-in class for seniors. Let those who would benefit from the class take it. But don’t force it on students who were assured time and time again that it would be optional. It is crucial that our voices are heard and administrative promises are kept.
Sign this petition to demand change and uphold the rights of students at Jefferson. Together, we can advocate for a fair, equitable, and genuinely beneficial educational environment for all seniors. Stand with us to ensure that promises made are promises kept. Sign now and let your voice be heard!
