The Issue

https://www.tiktok.com/@carewithmisty/video/7678824842669427982I felt the sting of retaliation in a place that was meant to be a haven for care: a nursing home. As a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), I'm dedicated to the well-being of the residents, yet when our new administrator started using his authority for personal gains in despicable ways, I couldn't stand idly by. A fellow CNA was subjected to his inappropriate advances, and when I spoke out, the backlash was swift and harsh.

Retaliation in nursing homes is real. It's a chain of reactions that silences those who are brave enough to speak up, not just about harassment, but also about the mistreatment of residents and the poor behavior of other staff members. When I reported these issues to corporate, instead of receiving support, I was further marginalized—eventually leading to my wrongful termination.

This is not an isolated issue. Across nursing homes in the country, CNAs are bullied by management whenever they raise valid concerns. According to the National Center on Elder Abuse, nursing home staff who report misconduct regularly face intimidation or retaliation. These environments should be about compassion, care, and professionalism, yet they are plagued by fear of retribution for speaking the truth.

While federal laws like the Elder Justice Act exist to protect individuals who report abuse, these regulations are insufficient when management finds ways to bend and break these rules with minimal consequence. Stronger enforcement and accountability measures are desperately needed to protect those who protect our elders. Mechanisms should be in place within every nursing home to ensure that CNAs can speak freely about any misconduct without fear of losing their jobs or facing harassment.

I urge lawmakers and elder care oversight bodies to enforce stricter regulations and ensure protective measures for CNAs. Establish independent reporting bodies that can intervene effectively without interference from biased parties at the workplace. Implement regular, transparent audits and anonymous feedback systems within facilities. If CNAs are able to report safely, the quality of care for residents can improve significantly.

No one should be punished for doing the right thing. Let us pave the way for safer, more respectful workplaces for CNAs. This petition seeks to ignite a change that protects the integrity of care environments and the dedicated professionals within them.

Please sign this petition to urge nursing home authorities and legislators to ensure safe reporting avenues and to end retaliatory practices. Together, we can protect our caregivers and those they serve.
