Stop Light Pollution Near Sea Turtle Nesting Sites

Stop Light Pollution Near Sea Turtle Nesting Sites
The Issue
During the full moon, sea turtles instinctually come out of the ocean to lay their eggs in the sand. The full moon triggers higher tides that enables baby sea turtles to crawl and swim back into the ocean. Baby sea turtles find their way into the ocean by following the brightest light source, which is naturally the moon or the open horizon. Urban development creates artificial lighting that sea turtles see as the brightest light source, misleading the baby sea turtles to the urban development instead of the ocean. Also, artificial lighting causes sea turtle disorientation to the hatchlings. In a 1999 case study at the Gulf Islands National Seashore, there was around 50% of the hatchlings that were disoriented. 1/4 of the these baby sea turtles were headed in the opposite direction of the ocean. If the baby sea turtles go in the direction of the artificial lighting, they will head away from the ocean and into roads, where they can get run over. If they do not find their way into the ocean, the baby sea turtles will be exposed and prone to dehydration and predation. By turning off lights and covering windows with dark blinds, more sea turtles will have a higher chance of surviving. Help save the sea turtles by stopping light pollution.
