The Issue
The city of Lewiston is proceeding with plans to cut down vast areas of woodland behind my house to pave the way for a new housing development. This drastic action threatens not only the beauty and tranquility of our local environment but also disrupts the habitats of countless wildlife species. It's imperative that we address this issue before it's too late.
These woods are home to diverse wildlife, including countless bird species, deer, foxes, and other animals that rely on this natural habitat for their survival. Destroying these woods displaces these animals, forcing them into urban areas where they struggle to survive and often become nuisances. According to the National Wildlife Federation, habitat loss is the leading threat to wildlife, accounting for 85% of all species classified as 'endangered' or 'threatened.'
In addition, urban development contributes to environmental degradation through increased pollution, carbon emissions, and reduced natural landscapes that help mitigate flooding. The trees they plan to clear play a critical role in absorbing carbon dioxide and providing clean air, which is vital for our community's health and well-being. Moreover, residents of the current neighborhood enjoy the woods for recreational activities, including hiking and bird-watching, which will be lost if this development proceeds.
The proposed development will reportedly result in small houses that sell for almost half a million dollars. This not only raises concerns about affordability but also questions the true necessity of such construction when empty lots and opportunities for urban renewal within city bounds exist.
We understand the need for housing, but it should not come at the expense of our environment and wildlife. We urge Lewiston's city planners to reconsider this development in favor of more sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives. Rather than clear-cutting woodlands, we propose they focus on renovating existing properties or repurposing vacant land within the city, which better aligns with sustainable growth principles.
Please help us protect Lewiston's natural environment and its unique wildlife by signing this petition. Together, we can encourage a development strategy that respects both the community's needs and environmental preservation.
