The Issue

Students, families, caregivers, staff, and community members are asking the Pittsburgh Public School Administration to STOP the harmful practice of 'LEVELING' for this academic year (26-27) and the next year (27-28).

Leveling is the practice of moving teachers, regrouping and reordering students and classes, and restructuring alignment after the academic year has already begun. This adjustment is done based on enrollment, and at PPS it is initiated at the beginning of October, 7 weeks after the start of school. We believe this disrupts student learning and negatively impacts their social-emotional well-being.

Those who sign this petition support a 2-year MORATORIUM on 'leveling'. We ask that no leveling occurs for the 2026-27 and 2027-28 school years in order to minimize the anticipated impact of school closures, reconfiguration and consolidations that PPS students and staff will face.
