The Issue

As a student who battles a math disability, the recent decision by the Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) to make Standard of Learning (SOL) assessments count for 10% of our final grade is more than just challenging; it's disheartening. Many of us have faced unprecedented challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, impacting our learning abilities and psychological well-being. The notion that imposing this grading system will drive academic success seems far removed from the reality we face in classrooms. I personally have a math disabilities but it is not that bad

The LCPS school board's decision places an undue amount of stress on students who already struggle with learning disabilities. SOLs, intended as standardized assessments, are now becoming high-stakes tests that intensify anxiety among students, particularly those grappling with subjects such as mathematics. The pressure to perform in these assessments, with such weight attached to our final grades, is overwhelming and counterproductive to our  some studies show that testing does not necessarily correlate with academic improvement. Instead, it often leads to “teaching to the test” where the overarching goal becomes about getting higher scores rather than truly understanding the material. For students with disabilities, this means an even greater disparity as these tests do not adequately accommodate our unique learning challenges.

LCPS should focus on inclusive educational practices that recognize individual learning differences, offering personalized support rather than intensifying pressures that contribute to student trauma. Alternatives such as portfolio assessments, project-based learning, and formative assessments could provide a more comprehensive and less stressful evaluation of students’ knowledge and skills.

We need a system that empowers us, not one that adds to our burdens. Let’s urge the LCPS school board to reconsider their decision and explore evaluation methods that genuinely support all students, particularly those with learning disabilities, without compromising their mental health.
