The Issue

I recently experienced a deep and personal concern after coming across an unsettling revelation: the presence of carcinogens, cancer-causing substances, in hair products including braiding hair . As a member of the Black community, this strikes close to home. Braiding isn't just a style for us - it's an integral part of our heritage that's now being threatened. This is an issue that shouldn't exist in the first place.

The National Center for Biotechnology Information reports that certain hair products used predominantly in Black communities contain endocrine-disrupting and asthmagen chemicals. This insidious problem has managed to slip through the cracks for far too long. We, the Black community, should be able to embrace and celebrate our culture without compromising our well-being.

Consumer Reports also conducted a comprehensive study on braiding hair products and found that many contain dangerous carcinogens. Their report highlighted that several popular brands exceed safe chemical limits, putting consumers at risk. These findings emphasize the urgent need for stricter regulations and mandatory safety testing before these products hit the shelves.

Therefore, we are calling on the FDA to investigate synthetic braiding hair and set strict standards for these products by limiting dangerous chemicals - especially known carcinogens, such as benzene - and heavy metals, including lead. The FDA also should require companies to disclose full lists of ingredients, so consumers know about potential hazards in these products.

Join us in holding the manufacturers and corporations accountable. We deserve to engage with our cultural practices without the overt threat of harmful substances lurking in our products. Sign this petition to help bring about the necessary change and ensure that every product is safe before reaching consumers.
