The Issue

  • LGBTQ+ lives are not politics. They are human rights — and it’s time social media treated them that way.

Right now, social media platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook label LGBTQ+ topics as “political” content. This harms creators and communities by limiting their reach, demonetizing their voices, and deterring advertisers from supporting them. At the same time, extremist groups and political campaigns are able to purchase targeted ads that spread hate and misinformation, framing LGBTQ+ lives as if they are up for debate.

LGBTQ+ identity is not a political talking point. It is a matter of human dignity and safety. When platforms reduce conversations about our existence, our struggles, and our pride to “politics,” they silence creators, reward hate, and reinforce dangerous narratives. This problem is especially urgent during election seasons, when marginalized communities are weaponized as scapegoats to win votes, leaving LGBTQ+ people vulnerable to harassment and exploitation.

We demand that social media companies reclassify LGBTQ+ issues as humanitarian, not political. Platforms must stop treating our lives like campaign material and instead protect LGBTQ+ creators from harmful demonetization and targeted hate ads. Supporting equality, safety, and representation is not politics. It is a matter of basic human rights. By signing this petition, you can help pressure platforms to make this change and ensure that LGBTQ+ voices are heard, respected, and protected.

  • But it doesn't have to be all doom and gloom...

Every person deserves to feel safe, seen, and supported online. Conversations about LGBTQ+ identity are not political arguments but reflections of love, resilience, and community. When creators share their stories, they help build understanding and compassion across the world. These voices should be celebrated and uplifted, not pushed aside or treated as controversial.

By reclassifying LGBTQ+ issues as humanitarian instead of political, social media platforms have the opportunity to affirm that dignity and equality belong to everyone. Together, we can create spaces where authenticity is not punished, and where all people are free to share their truths without fear of suppression or hate. Change begins when we recognize our shared humanity, and with your support, we can make that recognition a reality.

  • So, what kind of action are we looking to achieve?

Outlined here, a timeline of what we hope to accomplish with this petition:

  1. Launch petition and gather widespread signatures.
  2. Reach out to LGBTQ+ creators, advocacy groups, and allies to share and amplify the cause.
  3. Begin contacting media outlets, blogs, and podcasts to highlight the issue.

With a rough time estimate of about (0-3 months, dependent of course on how well this petition does!) More action can be taken and expounded upon after reaching these 3 milestone goals.

What can I do to help after signing?!

Your signature is the first step, but real change comes when we act together. After signing, you can help by:

  • Sharing the petition with friends, family, and your social networks to spread awareness.
  • Tagging creators and advocacy groups who may want to amplify this cause. #DignityNotDebate or #HumanRightsNotPolitics
  • Contacting platforms directly through their feedback forms or help centers to let them know you support this change. (Please remember to be respectful and excellent to each other, this is a movement, not a war.)
  • Engaging respectfully online by uplifting LGBTQ+ voices and countering misinformation with compassion. DO NOT SILENCE OR EXCLUDE PEOPLE WHO WISH TO HELP. EXCLUSION IN THE ENEMY OF EQUALITY.

Every action, big or small, builds momentum. By standing together, we can show social media platforms that millions of us believe LGBTQ+ lives are not politics, but humanity.
