Stop ISD's removal of block classes and the Humanities Department from Skyline High School
The Issue
The Issaquah School District has made a "final" decision to remove block classes from Skyline and eliminate the Humanities Department by replacing it with both a Social Studies and Language Arts department.
Block classes, which are two-period-long integrated classes that cover integrated content on SS/LA, are one of the main reasons that make Skyline special. Note that Skyline was literally built with the block format in mind; the classrooms have moveable walls and projectors are placed to accommodate for a dual-class. The faculty who teach block classes are extremely qualified and experienced. I'm a history geek; my social studies teacher is the only teacher I've had who possesses such expansive knowledge of social studies that I feel 1. there is room to learn, and 2. I should listen and take the class seriously. As a student, I feel like the block program has a reputation that speaks for itself. Skyline is losing a huge part of itself and something very valuable with the loss of the block, and future students lose an immense opportunity to learn in a cohesive and rigorous way.
There is very limited transparency when it comes to the district's decision. During the official vote, the district went as far as to remove the student reps’ vote on the matter. There is a problem when the decision is a shock to students. If the goal is to “help students,” why were students not informed earlier or meaningfully consulted?
The decision feels insufficiently explained and confusing. What's the reason behind it? It seems that few people know. We are asking the district to reverse this decision and to engage students, families, and educators in an open process before making changes that reshape Skyline’s academic programs.
Let this petition show that students and parents want the district to reconsider and keep block classes at Skyline.
UPDATE: It has been reported that IB Block will remain at Skyline, which is most definitely great news. However, this does not discount the fact that the district has had a concerning lack of communication and transparency when making this commitment, and that, for the future, the district must consult students and parents alike before making such a transformational decision.
