Stop Iron county Jail from being built within 2000 Feet of homes

Stop Iron county Jail from being built within 2000 Feet of homes
The Issue
In a recent Cedar City Planning Commission meeting, Iron County Administrator Reed Erickson proposed a plan for a new Jail to be built on Smead Blvd near the corner of Highway 56 and Lund Highway. The county is requesting a Conditional Use Permit to buy the land and build the jail. The Planning Commission will vote whether to support or oppose this on December 7th, at 5:15 pm in Council Chambers located at 10 N Main St. Cedar City. The Cedar City Council will be the next stop for the permit. Be on the lookout for when the City Council meeting is held. If the city council does not approve the permit, the jail can not be built at this location. They usually follow the recommendation of the planning commission, but aren’t required to. We are requesting concerned individuals to Sign, Email, Attend. Sign this petition. Email our local leaders. Attend Cedar City planning commission, county commission, and Cedar City council meetings so your voice can be heard. Act today and oppose the new jail site now before it’s too late. This area of Cedar City is full of beautiful communities that are wonderful places to raise a family. Let’s keep it that way.
The current Jail has 180 beds. New Jail will house over 600. That is more than 3 times the current capacity.
The current jail houses not only county inmates but also state and federal convicts. The county’s plan is for the majority of the beds to be filled with even more convicted State and Federal criminals because of the extra money the county is paid for doing so.
New jail design will have fewer officers per inmate than it currently has despite a larger inmate population.
The new 40 acre jail site is 2000 feet from Monte Vista neighborhood and 3000 feet from Equestrian Pointe. If an inmate escaped, they could be to a home in those neighborhoods within minutes.
Much of the area around the proposed site is currently zoned for residential. Single family homes are unlikely to be built once a jail is there which substantially raises the likelihood of it being rezoned as high-density residential.
Iron Springs Elementary is less than 2 miles away.
The county already owns land that could be used out by the landfill, but states the cost of bringing utilities in is higher than they would like.
Please email Cedar City Council members and the mayor to let your voice be heard. Iron County commission is in charge of this project, so email our county commissioners too.
