• Stop Internet Blackouts in Iran That Block Emergency Alerts and Endanger Civilians
The Issue
During periods of conflict in Iran, the government repeatedly shuts down or severely restricts internet access, leaving millions of civilians without the ability to receive emergency alerts, access reliable information, or communicate with their families. These shutdowns occur precisely when people are most vulnerable and most in need of life‑saving warnings. Without internet access, civilians cannot learn about incoming attacks, evacuation routes, or safety instructions. Families are left in fear, unable to check on one another or call for help. This enforced silence puts countless lives at risk.
At the same time, the ongoing conflict has intensified repression inside the country. Voices demanding safety, transparency, or basic rights are met with censorship, intimidation, and violence. Internet blackouts are used as a tool to hide what is happening on the ground, to prevent documentation of abuses, and to isolate the population from the outside world. In these moments, people in Iran are not only facing the dangers of war but also the danger of being cut off from the information that could protect them.
Iranians are calling for urgent international support to ensure uninterrupted access to the internet and emergency communication systems during crises. Access to information is not a luxury—it is a fundamental human right and a critical lifeline in times of danger. No population should be left without warnings, without communication, and without the ability to protect themselves and their families.
We ask the global community, human rights organizations, and technology companies to take immediate action to help keep communication channels open for civilians in Iran. Protecting access to the internet during conflict is essential to safeguarding lives, documenting realities on the ground, and ensuring that people are not left in darkness during moments of extreme
