Stop International Astronautical Congress in Azerbaijan

Stop International Astronautical Congress in Azerbaijan
The Issue
I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the upcoming Azerbaijan Aerospace Congress scheduled for October 2nd-6th 2023 in Baku. While the field of aerospace is undoubtedly important for scientific and technological advancement, we must also consider the ethical and moral implications of supporting events hosted by entities that are involved in human rights violations and aggression towards certain communities.
It has come to my attention that the Azerbaijani government has been widely criticized for its actions in the recent conflict with Armenia, specifically the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Reports from various international organizations and independent observers have documented numerous human rights abuses during and after the conflict, including displacement of civilians, destruction of cultural heritage sites, and allegations of war crimes. These actions have caused immense suffering for both Armenians and Christians in the region, and they should not go unnoticed or unaddressed.
Given the gravity of these allegations and the ongoing concerns surrounding human rights in Azerbaijan, I believe it would be morally and ethically inappropriate to support the Azerbaijan Aerospace Congress at this time. By participating in or sponsoring this event, we inadvertently condone and legitimize actions that have caused suffering and displacement for innocent people.
I urge you to reconsider your involvement with the Azerbaijan Aerospace Congress and to join the global community in condemning human rights violations and aggression wherever they occur. Instead, let us support events and initiatives that promote peace, justice, and cooperation among nations.
It is my hope that your organization will take a principled stand against supporting events associated with countries or entities involved in such controversies and consider redirecting your resources and influence towards endeavors that align with the values of peace, human rights, and justice for all.
