The Issue

Sixteen years ago, I moved to the beautiful city of Mesquite, NV, drawn by its sunny climate and electric-only energy infrastructure. As someone deeply concerned about climate change, I was reassured knowing that our city was committed to cleaner energy solutions by avoiding fossil fuels. However, five years ago, my world turned a bit darker when I discovered that the city was installing natural gas lines into new construction throughout our community, including my own retirement community.

This decision deeply disturbs me, not only as a resident but as someone who has witnessed the noticeable and alarming changes in our local climate—hotter temperatures, stronger winds, and increasingly erratic precipitation. These changes serve as a daily reminder of the damage caused by fossil fuels and the urgent need to transition to more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy sources.

With reported CO2 levels climbing to around 425 ppm, the highest in millennia, we are reminded that the indiscriminate use of fossil fuels has contributed significantly to climate change. Introducing gas lines in our infrastructure is a regressive step, jeopardizing both the environment and the future that we owe to the coming generations.

Mesquite should be a leader in climate-conscious urban planning. We must prioritize the environment by requiring electric hookups for all new construction in our city, thus promoting the use of renewable energy sources and reducing our carbon footprint.

By making this transition, Mesquite has the opportunity to set an example for other cities, showing that a commitment to greener energy sources is not just possible but necessary. This shift will help preserve our environment while ensuring a future for our children and theirs.

Please join me in urging the City of Mesquite to halt the installation of gas lines in new infrastructure projects and to adopt policies that mandate electricity hookups for all new buildings. Together, we can help make Mesquite a model city for environmental responsibility and sustainability. Sign this petition to make our city a greener, healthier place to live.
