Stop Indiana’s Power Grab: No Mid-Decade Redistricting

Stop Indiana’s Power Grab: No Mid-Decade Redistricting
The Issue
In 2021, Indiana lawmakers drew new congressional districts based on fresh census data — maps they said were fair and reflected our communities. Now, just a few years later, some political leaders are pushing to rip up those maps early, not because of major population changes, but to lock in partisan advantage before the 2026 midterms.
This is a dangerous precedent. Redistricting was never meant to be a political weapon used whenever one party feels threatened. Indiana law limits congressional map-drawing to the first legislative session after the census for a reason — to protect voters from exactly this kind of manipulation.
Even former Republican leaders, like ex-House Speaker Brian Bosma, have called early redistricting “bad form” and “probably contrary to Indiana law.” Many rank-and-file Republican lawmakers agree, saying it’s “optically horrible” and unnecessary in a state where seven out of nine congressional seats already lean solidly Republican.
Mid-decade redistricting is nothing more than a partisan power grab that silences voters. It would waste taxpayer money, invite costly legal battles, and erode the trust Hoosiers have in our democracy.
We, the people of Indiana, call on Governor Mike Braun, House Speaker Todd Huston, and Senate President Rodric Bray to reject any attempt to call a special session for early redistricting. Our maps were drawn just three years ago. Our votes — and our voices — should count as they are until the next census in 2030.
Indiana doesn’t need this fight. We need leaders who will stand up for fair representation and focus on the real issues affecting our families, not political gamesmanship that puts party over people.
Sign to tell Indiana’s leaders: Hands off our districts — protect our democracy, not partisan power.
