As a concerned citizen, I am deeply troubled by the detrimental impact of imported foreign seafood on our local fishermen and seafood industry. It is disheartening to witness the decline in our local seafood prices and the subsequent struggles faced by our hardworking fishermen. This petition aims to raise awareness about this issue and urge relevant authorities to take immediate action.

Growing imports of foreign seafood have flooded our markets, causing a significant drop in demand for locally caught fish. This has resulted in devastating consequences for our local fishermen who rely on their catch as their primary source of income. In the 1980s, shrimpers were receiving close to $7 per pound at the dock; however, today they are barely earning $.80 per pound. Such a drastic decline in earnings is simply unsustainable for these dedicated individuals who work tirelessly to bring fresh seafood to our tables.

The rising cost of diesel further exacerbates the challenges faced by our fishermen. With diesel prices hovering around $4 per gallon, many commercial fishermen find themselves unable to afford leaving the docks due to financial constraints. This not only affects their livelihood but also impacts other businesses that depend on commercial fishing activities.

It is crucial that we recognize and address this issue promptly before irreparable damage is done to both our local fishing communities and overall economy. By reducing imports and supporting domestic fisheries, we can revive our struggling industry while ensuring fair compensation for those who dedicate their lives to providing us with high-quality seafood.

We call upon government officials at all levels – from local representatives to federal agencies – as well as consumers like ourselves, restaurants, supermarkets, and wholesalers alike:

1) Implement policies that prioritize domestic sourcing of seafood products.
2) Enforce stricter regulations on imported seafood quality standards.
3) Promote consumer education about supporting local fisheries.
4) Provide financial assistance programs or subsidies to help fishermen cope with rising costs.
5) Encourage collaboration between fishermen and seafood businesses to explore innovative solutions for sustainability and growth.

By signing this petition, we stand in solidarity with our local fishermen, demanding immediate action to protect their livelihoods and the future of our seafood industry. Together, let us ensure that they receive fair compensation for their hard work and dedication. Let us support our local economy by choosing locally caught seafood over imported alternatives.

Join us in making a difference today! Together, we can save our local fisherman and preserve the rich heritage of our coastal communities.
