Stop Illegal Rent Increases and Tenant Harassment at Danforth Rd – Protect Our Homes and O

The Issue

Landlords at 1320–1360 Danforth Rd are imposing illegal rent increases (AGIs) and harassing tenants — including seniors. A 78-year-old was falsely told he owed rent for months despite a clean ledger. We demand accountability, investigations, and an end to these unlawful practices.

My name is Judith, and I’m a tenant at 1340 Danforth Road in Toronto — a community I’ve called home for years. But what was once a safe space has now become a source of fear, financial strain, and daily stress.

Our landlord has been imposing illegal Above Guideline Increases (AGIs) on tenants — without justification or approval. These unwarranted rent hikes have pushed countless families, immigrants, seniors, and low-income residents to the edge.

This is not just a policy issue. It’s personal.

One of our neighbors — a 78-year-old senior on pension — was harassed month after month and told he owed rent he didn’t owe. His official ledger showed $0 owing. But that didn’t stop the landlord from issuing repeated threats of eviction unless he paid.

Only after I personally intervened and warned that this constituted senior financial fraud did the harassment stop.
But how many others are still silently enduring similar treatment?

This isn’t an isolated case. Buildings across 1320, 1330, 1340, 1350, and 1360 Danforth Rd are experiencing these same injustices. We are a working-class, multicultural, and family-oriented community — and we are being targeted.

We’ve organized under the RentCap Association, a tenant-led group fighting to restore dignity and legal protections to our homes. We’re asking for your support in demanding that authorities take immediate action.

📢 We Call On the City of Toronto, the Landlord and Tenant Board, and Provincial Authorities To:

Launch an official investigation into all Above Guideline Increases (AGIs) imposed at these addresses.
✅ Enforce rent control laws and penalize landlords who bypass legal procedures.
✅ Issue rent refunds to tenants who were overcharged.
✅ Protect seniors and vulnerable tenants from harassment and financial abuse.
✅ Support community-driven programs offering legal aid, youth support, and small business empowerment for renters.

AGIs were never meant to be routine — yet many landlords now use them as a loophole to push people out and drive profits up. And because so many renters aren’t aware of their rights, these practices often go unchallenged.

Nearly 50% of Toronto renters are financially overburdened by their housing costs. Unlawful AGIs only make that worse — and it’s costing families their stability, their safety, and their futures.

We are standing together to say:
Enough is enough.
