The Issue
Illegal mining, known locally as 'galamsey', has become an endemic issue in Morso, located in the Asante Akim South District. This unlawful activity is not only devastating our environment but is also causing severe socioeconomic repercussions for the local communities.
The people of Morso are witnessing the degradation of their lands and water bodies. This environmental destruction results in the loss of biodiversity and agricultural lands, which are vital for the livelihoods of many families. Moreover, the contamination of water sources due to the use of harmful chemicals, such as mercury, poses severe health risks to the inhabitants and wildlife alike.
Economically, galamsey operations undermine the local economy by causing a decline in agriculture and threatening jobs in sectors like tourism and fishing. The loss of natural resources and arable lands forces many individuals to abandon their traditional ways of making a living, leading to unemployment and poverty.
We understand that mining can be a lucrative industry; however, illegal mining operations do not contribute to the national economy. The proceeds from galamsey don't undergo legitimate tax processes, resulting in lost revenue that could have been used to develop the community and the nation at large.
To address these issues, we call upon the Ghanaian government and relevant environmental authorities to take decisive actions to combat illegal mining in Morso. This includes increased monitoring and enforcement of mining regulations, providing local communities with alternative livelihood options, and creating awareness about the long-term consequences of galamsey.
By coming together and supporting this petition, we can urge authorities to protect our environment and ensure sustainable economic opportunities for all. Let's make a difference for Morso, for Asante Akim South, and for the future generations. Please sign this petition to demand immediate action against illegal mining activities.
