The Issue

The Kruger National Park is one of the last true wildernesses on our planet, a sanctuary of beauty and biodiversity. However, this haven is in grave danger. The rivers that provide water to this precious ecosystem are being poisoned by illegal gold mining activities. When the state does not uphold Section 24 of the Constitution, it places Indigenous communities, export agriculture, tourism, and hundreds of thousands of jobs in jeopardy.

Damage to the Blyde and Olifants catchment

Illegal gold mining operations, often conducted without any regard for environmental regulations or the health of local ecosystems, are devastating the rivers that nourish the park. These activities are introducing harmful chemicals and sediments into the waterways, threatening not just the flora and fauna within the park, but also the integrity of the regional water supply.

The impact of these operations is catastrophic. Water pollution disrupts the delicate balance of life, affecting everything from aquatic plants to the majestic elephants and lions that roam the park. This contamination not only destroys natural habitats but also poses significant health risks to the communities who depend on these rivers for their livelihood.

The illegal mining activities put at risk hundreds of thousands of jobs. Unregulated mining seriously affects the agriculture, environmental, tourism, mining and forestry sectors. A thriving agricultural export market is directly endangered due to rising levels of heavy metals and poisions, typically produced as byproducts of unregulated mining. Furthermore infrastructure is being damaged and organised crime is spiralling out of control along the banks of the Blyde river and its tributories.

The South African government must take decisive action to protect these vital water sources. We are calling for the establishment of dedicated support systems to monitor and prevent illegal mining activities, and for the implementation of stricter penalties for those caught violating environmental laws.

Additionally, increased funding and resources are needed to equip local enforcement agencies with the necessary tools to sustainably manage and protect our rivers. Community education programs can also raise awareness about the risks of illegal mining and promote conservation.

Protecting the Kruger National Park's water supply is not just about preserving its breathtaking beauty or its diverse wildlife. It is about safeguarding a vital natural resource for future generations and maintaining the delicate ecological balance that supports all life in this region.

I urge you to join me in demanding that the South African government take immediate action to protect our rivers from the effects of illegal gold mining. Sign this petition today to ensure the survival of one of the world's last untouched wildernesses.

We call on the ministers of tourism (Patricia de Lille), agriculture (John Henry Steenhuisen), mineral resources and energy (Mr. Gwede Mantashe), police (Firoz Cachalia ), DFFE (Mr. Willie Aucamp), Water and sanitation (Ms. Pemmy Majodina) to setup a community integrated panel who will oversee urgent action regarding this issue.
