Stop illegal fireworks in Anne Arundel County, Maryland
The Issue
For several decades, my family and I have cherished our small farm in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. We settled here in the 70s, drawn by the promise of a rural, peaceful life. Over the years, however, urbanization has crept into our once isolated haven as builders transformed surrounding farms into bustling communities. While we have embraced these changes, one persistent issue plagues our community: the illegal use of fireworks.
As each holiday approaches, a deep sense of dread settles over us. These celebrations, once so eagerly awaited, have become a time of anxiety and fear. Our animals—faithful companions on our farm—suffer gravely from the chaos caused by illegal fireworks. The noise terrifies them, leading to injuries, heart attacks, and even the heartbreaking necessity of euthanasia. Our holidays have devolved into nights spent in damage control, battling to keep our beloved animals calm and safe.
But it's not just animals that suffer. Many veterans in our community relive traumatic experiences because of these disturbances. Fireworks may be a source of brief enjoyment for some, but they cause physical and emotional harm to others, making their outlawing a necessity.
The law is clear: illegal purchase and use of fireworks are prohibited in Anne Arundel County, yet enforcement remains lax. Those who buy fireworks from out of state and use them here, and all who set them off illegally, need to be held accountable. Strict enforcement of existing laws is imperative.
We call upon local authorities to intensify restriction measures regarding the sale and use of fireworks by heavily prosecuting offenders. Increased patrols and a clear public stance against these unlawful activities can create a safer environment for all.
Please lend your voice to protect the welfare of animals and people affected by these disturbances. Sign this petition urging Anne Arundel County to take decisive action against illegal fireworks. Together, we can reclaim our holidays and restore peace to our community.
