ICE is about to pay a private data company millions of dollars for access to personal information on millions of people, and that data is set to feed into a powerful government tracking and AI system.

According to newly released federal records, ICE plans to spend roughly $6.7 million to keep using tools built by LexisNexis, a company that says it links together "over 82 billion public and proprietary records from more than 10,000 sources," according to its own website. The records say this data will support "all aspects of ICE screening and vetting, lead development, and criminal analysis activities," according to the procurement document — work tied to ICE's deportation operations.

The plan goes further.

ICE wants this data plugged into a surveillance platform, built by the tech company Palantir, that's already used to map out neighborhoods for enforcement.

The deal also calls for an AI tool that can "infer the identity of the end user" and a facial recognition system built to match faces "across diverse sources, including open-source media," according to the document — all in bulk.

This is happening as ICE made more than 51,000 arrests in July alone, including many at airports. Buying up this kind of tracking power expands the reach of an already unaccountable agency into millions of lives, not just immigrants.
